Dear Sarah,
The German troops are not being as cooperative as they said in the beginning of the war. Today they took my boots and my good jacket and in return they gave me old clothes from dead soldiers. Also, the German soldiers get a lot more food including vodka. All the Italian soldiers get is a piece of brot, potatoes and wurst. Recently they have been killing many of my fellow Italian soldiers because they asked for as many rights as the Germans. Finally they have been talking many Italian boys as soldiers and forced workers. I’m beginning to get worried they are going to break the treaty and invade Italy. I am very scared and don’t know If I can go on any longer. They work us very hard.
A week ago we invaded Poland with about 1.8 million troops using blitzkrieg. I was in the panzer division to finish off anything that lived. We had to go through every settlement and burn it down because they support the Soviets. Also in the settlements we had to send all the Jews to concentration camps where they would kill all young children, elderly people, and adults with children. They keep the fit adults to work. We also sent most teenage boys to work camps to build ports and air bases. I don’t like having to kill innocent people, especially the women and children. Even though Britain and France had declared war on Germany on September 3rd the Poles received no help. I’m also afraid that the allied forces are going to attack from the west, while the poles hold a defensive campaign. The poles are very weak and the axis powers are easily taking over Poland (the pole’s Calvary is nothing compared to the Germans tanks. Lately I have been thinking about running away, that would almost guarantee death.
I miss you and all the family so much, I hope the farm is doing okay without me. I will try and come home soon after the axis powers win the war.
Sincerely, Domenico Musso
